![]() White House Farm Barn, East Side White House Farm house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed about 1742. The barn was built about the same time, making it a good candidate for the oldest barn in Jefferson County. The farmhouse and barn were built by Dr. John McCormick, a Scots-Irish physician, who lived there until his death in 1768. Known as an owner of fine horses, McCormick may have used the stone barn to house these animals during its early years. The structure has undergone several changes that reflect its changing uses. Some time in the 19th century, the original gable roof was remodeled into a gambrel roof to produce additional storage space in the loft. About 1920, a concrete silo was added to the structure, which was used as a dairy barn until about 1950. This barn sustained severe damage in last winter's big snowstorm. It is being restored under a grant from the West Virginia State Historic Preservation. Visitors will be able to see a restoration project in progress. |
