| Preserving Our Past for the Future
Jefferson County, West Virginia, has changed a lot in the past 25 years. Back then there were fewer people and cars,
more farmland -- and more tangible reminders of our heritage. Groups
pushing preservation or progress have frequently butted heads here
during that quarter century. Whenever a crisis arose, organizations
formed and confronted each other, often stereotyping their opponents
as rabid preservationists or unscrupulous developers. When the crisis
disappeared, they did too, leaving the long-term issues of heritage
vs. change for another day.
The Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission is committed
to addressing those long-term issues. A branch of Jefferson County
government, the Landmarks Commission focuses on heritage education,
historic preservation, and historic resource development.
We promote heritage education because Jefferson Countians must understand
their past to decide what to preserve for the future.
We practice preservation -- supporting efforts to add new locations
to the National and County Registers of Historic Places, providing
guidance on resources for research and preservation techniques,
and undertaking major restoration projects.
We encourage planning and economic development that use and protect
our historic resources. Building a relationship of trust and cooperation
between preservation groups and the business community will help
us deal with the crises as well as the long-term problems.
We're doing
lots of interesting things with our heritage, and we hope you will support
our efforts. We invite you to read more about our efforts in the pages of this site. And, of course, we encourage you to join our efforts. To find out more, simply visit How You Can
