How
you can help
The projects you have read about on this site represent our significant, long-term commitment to preserving Jefferson County's heritage. Despite out commitment, these projects will not succeed without your financial and volunteer support.
It will cost more than $250,000 to restore the Peter Burr house
and an equal amount to transform the surrounding eight
acres into a working farm. Right now, we're making progress on developing the
infrastructure that will support this dream --
repairing the house's foundation; installing water,
electric, and telephone service; building pedestrian and
automobile bridges; and creating buffers. We have a long way to go.
The county sorely needs a comprehensive survey of historic sites to use as a long term planning document. The survey will take 5-6 years and cost $109,000 - $120,000.
Some grant money is available, but we need to raise at least $10,000 per year for matching funds.
Projects like our Farmers' and Artisans' Market and the Fall Barn Tour will provide some funds if you support them. Money available from government sources falls far short
of what we need for our work. To rescue our rural heritage
we need the sustained support of the community. We need
a commitment from people like you. You can become a Friend of the Jefferson County Historic
Landmarks Commission, donate items, or volunteer!

Some
Specific Needs for The Peter Burr Project:
The Landmarks Commission seeks volunteers with
a wide variety of skills and interests, including: archeology, carpentry,
restoration, preservation, maintenance, administration, fund raising,
research, public relations, and interpretation. Persons who know,
or want to learn, early American crafts skills are needed as well
as volunteers to develop youth programs. We are looking for persons
experienced in timber framing, log building construction, and black
smithing.
Volunteers are also needed to help survey the barns selected for the Barn Tour. If you can handle a measuring tape, clipboard, and pencil you're qualified to participate. Volunteers have found this project thoroughly enjoyable, and we hope to continue surveying other barns throughout the year.
Equipment needed for maintenance includes hoes, rakes, shovels;
a tractor with plow, disk, and mower.
Heritage
trees and shrubs are also sought (1800 or earlier), particularly
antique apples, white oak, and other varieties indigenous to the
area.
Timber
(preferably black locust and white oak) is needed for making shingles
and rails and for construction of a log barn.
